Right next to WV, purty as can be, and getting redder by the second.

My older son was on a youth-group retreat this weekend, so we decided to do something special on Saturday for the younger son in #1 son's absence. Younger son loves country drives, just exploring new places, so we rambled around Stokes County, NC (which is where we live, but we went down some roads we hadn't explored before), and eventually we ended up in Patrick County, VA. The day was absolutely gorgeous, not a cloud in the sky, and the countryside was beautiful. Also quirky and fascinating. I was struck once again by the contrast between country and city/burbs. In "McManisiony subdivisions," all the houses look the same; there's a depressing sameness about it all. But, in the country, every little house is quirky and individual. (With an endless variety of "yard art" -- LOL!) The roads we were exploring were winding and very rural; we saw almost nothing but little country houses and little country churches; it was like being in a time warp. Even the beat-up old Texaco sign on a roadside barn door seemed to evoke a 1940s-vintage landscape. It was jarring to reach Stuart, VA, and to encounter a "strip" with McDonalds, etc. (I said to hubby and son: "Oh, no, we're reentering the 21st century.")

Anyway, just have to say that I love living here. Where we are, just north of W-S, is probably best of both worlds: just country enough but with easy access to one of the best hospitals in the Southeast (Wake Forest-Baptist) -- which is a consideration when we geezers start gettin' up in years.
